I'm pretty neutral about Maiko, but I do have to say this: Politically speaking, Mai is hands-down the best choice Zuko could've made to solidify his rule.
She's got the background, the know-how, and the connections. Her parents are Governors. Her uncle's the Warden. Who knows how many other useful relatives she could have up her sleeve?
The fact that they like each other is, of course, a nice bonus
Plus, she's probably the only female character in Avatar who can actually sit through day after day of Court Intrigue and Politics.
